In the year 1975 Marhoom Sir Razick Fareed and his board of members realized the important role that Muslim women are required to play in this fast developing world. They directed their minds towards not merely accepting this fact but also recognizing it in a tangible way. On the 16th of May 1975, it was decided to inaugurate a women’s section under Marhoom Al - Haj Azhar Ghouse who was the Chairperson of the Economic and Social Welfare Committee of the M.I.C.H.
This committee elected Mrs. Fouz Nazick as the President, Mrs. Noor Abuhaniffa as the Hon. Secretary, Mrs. Mirza Ameen as the Treasurer and 9 Committee members as follows.
Mrs. Inaya Ghouse.
Mrs. Hafeefa Ghouse
Mrs. Thufa Careem
Mrs. Jezima Ismail
Mrs. Fouzuna Fouz
Mrs. Nilufer Buhary
Mrs. Sithy Cader
Mrs. Sithy Kadija Macan Mackar
Mrs. Imtiaz Ghouse
The women’s section functioned independently, but within the departmental committee of the economic and social welfare. The members of the women’s section requested that they be named as the Women’s Bureau so that they could meet on level grounds with other women’s organizations of repute in Sri Lanka and abroad. Mrs. Jezima Ismail was one of the prime movers for such a change.
The M.I.C.H. decided to amend its constitution to make it flexible to cover an under area of activities and a draft committee was formed with Marhoom.Alhaj M.S. Moujood, a senior member of the board as the chairman.
At the meeting held by the board of trustees on the 8th of December 1986, they accepted the amended constitution of the home with the name “Women’s Bureau” assigned to the Women’s section of the home. Since the inauguration of the Women’s Bureau it progressed rapidly in projecting social welfare activities and committee development.
In 1976 the Women’s Bureau was affiliated to the Sri Lanka Women’s Conference.
In 1987 we were affiliated to the Sri Lanka Muslim Women’s Conference.
In year 1991 the management of the Girl’s Hostel was handed over to the President. Mrs. Zahar Rizvi Haniffa, then the President of the Women’s Bureau by the President of the parent body Al-Haj A.M.M. Marleen .
During the tenure of Mrs. Farida Sherifudeen as the President, we celebrated our 25th anniversary on the 20th of November 2000 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo 7. Our chief guest who graced the occasion was his worship the Mayor of Colombo Al-Haj Omar Kamil, the present president of M.I.C.H. with his gracious wife Lady Zuraika Kamil.
In 1977 our membership stood at 75 where as in year 2008 our membership has increased upto 150.
