From the inception the women’s section had a girls’ hostel catering to undergraduates. They came from remote areas in search of accommodation in a safe and inexpensive Islamic atmosphere in the city of Colombo, to attend universities and other academic institutions. This was initially handled by the parent body and later in the1990’s was handed over to the Women’s Bureau. Due to lack of space we were compelled to limit the admissions for the hostel.
Due to the untiring effort taken by Al-Haj Marleen, then president of the MICH, a meeting was arranged with the ambassador of U.A.E in Sri Lanka. We, the members of the Women’s Bureau , Mrs. Farida Sherifudeen, Mrs Fouzi Rahim, Mrs. Mirzeth Saleem and Mrs. Faiza Jazeel, met the ambassador Mr. Hamdani, who responded to help us.
The director general of the Zaid Bin Sulthan Al Nahiyan Humanitarian and Charitable foundation of U.A.E. His Excellency Abdulla Bin Sultan Al Dahiri visited Sri Lanka. By prearrangements made by the president Al-Haj Marleen, his Excellency visited the Women’s Bureau and was made aware of the need for funding for our building project. Alhamdulilah, he promised to extend all possible assistance towards this worthy cause.
We received a substantial amount of finance funded by a lady of the Royal family of U.A.E, Sheika Fathima Bint Mubarak, after which the building work began. We had a ceremonial event of laying the foundation stone for the building. The president of the Women’ Bureau Mrs. Farida Sherifudeen delivered the vote of thanks, thanking the donors and the parent body.
The new building was the brain child of the past president Al-Haj Marleen .Thanks should be to Allah the almighty, the donors, the president, the board of trustees and the office staff of the M.I.C.H. for doing this magnanimous task. Masha Allah we have a building consisting of six stories.
This magnificent building has been named as, " Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Building" and was declared opened at a grand ceremony by Hon. W.J.M. Lokubandara MP, Speaker of Sri Lanka Parliament and His Excellency Mahmood Mohammed Al-Mahmood , Ambassador of UAE amidst a large gathering of distinguished people on 17th December 2007. The president of the Women's Bureau Mrs. Faiza Jazeel delivered a speech.
