Service Projects |

The main service project of the Women’s Bureau is the administration of the Girls’ Hostel. Our main aim is to provide inexpensive accommodation in a safe Islamic environment to girls from all parts of Sri Lanka who come to Colombo to continue their higher studies.
In 1998 we donated toward the SAFA housing project Beruwella built for refugees organized by Sri Lanka Muslim Women’s Conference.
1998/99 we undertook a prison project in collaboration with Sri Lanka Women’s Conference and the Ministry of Women’s Affairs ( Sewa Vanitha Unit).
In 2001 we donated cash to the defense fund and also donated clothes to the Army Hospital.
In year 2002 a relief assistance program was carried out by the Women’s Bureau as a flood relief support in Akuressa an affected Muslim village which needed immediate aid.
In year 2004 when the whole country was sunk in dismay, devastated by the tsunami, the Women’s Bureau came forward to give away medicinal drugs,clothing, food items etc..to the Eastern Province. We donated Rs.150,000 to a mosque in a small village in Maruthamunai in the Ampara District for tiling of the floor. We also visited Hambanthota and distributed food to the needy.
We gave cash donations to the widows who lost their husbands during Tsunami. This project was led by our present president Mrs. Faiza Jazeel.
Our latest service project is to help the undergraduates by giving them scholarships to complete their professional studies.
We have under taken a hospital project at the Lady Ridgeway Childrens’Hospital to paint a children’s ward and also donated bed sheets, linens etc…to the accident ward. |

Religious activities |

From 1975 Meeladun-Nabi celebrations, annual Ashura celebrations and various other events were celebrated at a grand scale.
The Women’s Bureau in collaboration with the Al-Islam foundation organized a ladies religious function – The Seera Conference at Omega Inn, Wellawatte , with speakers from South Africa, London, and Malaysia.
We regularly organize our annual Zakath distribution in the holy month of Ramazan to the needy Muslim families in the vicinity.All members contribute generously in cash and kind.
Muslim Aid Sri Lanka, an NGO has been helping us by giving festival packs to the needy from year 2007. This is done prior to Eid ul Fitr. |

Social recreational activities |

In 1980 a reception was accorded by us to the Ambassador of Pakistan, His Excellency Abdul Rauf Khan and Madam Rauf Khan during the tenure of Mrs.Inaya Ghouse.
Our first project was the opening of cottage industry classes. We had an exhibition and sale at Pasha Villa Premises.
During the tenure of Sithy Cader as president, a reception was accorded to Mrs. Anwer Sadath, wife of the former ambassador for the UAR.
In 1981 a reception was held to felicitate Mrs. Jezima Ismail on her appointment as one of the directors of SLBC.
A tea party was accorded to the wife of the Egyptian Aambassador Madam Kamal Abdul Gayoom. She donated three machines and a sewing class commenced at the hostel premises. We had a sale of readymade garments made by the students.
In 1990 we conducted a dress making and embroidery class in collaboration with Singer sewing Sri Lanka.
In 1994 we received two sewing machines from Mrs. Zainab Mahroof initiated by Mrs. Zahar Haniffa then president. In the same year we had an awards day for dress making under the patronage of M.H. Mohammed.
A general cookery class was conducted by the Bureau under the guidance of Mrs. Kareema Nizardeen.
We have demonstrations on cookery , handwork and offer many other recreational events to our general members.
In 1995 we had a seasonal sale as a fund raiser at S.D.S. Jayasinghe Hall. Mr&Mrs Shafeek Rajabdeen graced the occasion as chief guests.
In 1997 we had a musical show which was organized by the outgoing president Mrs. Zahar Haniffa.
We had a pre Ramazan sale in aid of our building fund. Mr.Hashim Omer graced the occasion.
In year 2000 we organized a Ramazan sale at our hostel premises. Mrs.Ameena Musthapha graced the occasion as the chief guest.
We organized two Coffee Evenings (Orchid Eve) in 2005 and 2007 at Holiday Inn and Hotel Intercontinental under the leadership of the president Mrs. Faiza Jazeel which was a tremendous success.
Every year we organize our annual picnic for our general membership.
The president and the committee felicitated AlHaj A M M Marleen PC on his appointment as the Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 30th December 2007. Speeches were delivered by Mr. Marleen, Mrs. Faiza Jazeel, President of the Women's Bureau and Mrs. Jezima Ismail. A dinner followed. I was held at No. 7, Lilly Avenue, Colombo 6. |

Current Projects |

We are hoping to have a Haj Fiesta on the 30th of November 2008 to raise funds for the scholarship fund.
We have plans to continue to maintain the Accident Ward of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital.
We have made arrangements to provide roofing sheets to a Muslim Government School in Nawalapitiya. |

Donations for our services |

The first donor who provided funds to the Bureau was Mrs. Nuzrath Ali Bhutto, the wife of the late president of Pakistan. This was under the leadership of Mrs.Fouz Nazick.
Most other donations are from the general membership and from fund raisers.
